New Caledonia travel tips at a glance
New Caledonia is a French territory in the South Pacific, with its own currency and its own entry rules. This page covers the points that most often decide a trip: money, documents, flights, local transport and safety. Conditions change, so every date below tells you when it applies.
Tourism is still recovering. The statistics office counted 14,000 stay tourists in the first quarter of 2026, about 54% of the level of 2023. Some services and transport links are therefore limited, and you should check the current status of anything you plan to rely on.

Visa and entry
Rules depend on your nationality. Check your own case with the French visa service before you book.
Not part of Schengen
New Caledonia is not in the Schengen area. A Schengen visa is not an automatic entry permit for the territory.
French and EU citizens
A holiday trip is possible without a visa with a valid passport. Do not assume that an ID card is enough on every transit route. Bring your passport.
Other nationalities
An exemption depends on your nationality and documents. For short stays, tourism information mentions up to 90 days in any 180 days. Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure, issued within the last 10 years and have at least 2 blank pages. This is not an exemption for every nationality.
Insurance
Australian travel advice lists travel insurance as an entry requirement. Take out a policy before you go.
Biosecurity
Declare plants, animals and food when you arrive. What is allowed and which permits you need depend on the product.
Tours from Nouméa
Lagoon trips, island days and guided visits from Nouméa, with live prices and availability.
Currency and money
The legal currency is the CFP franc, code XPF, not the euro.
The central bank gives a fixed rate of 1,000 XPF = 8.38 EUR, which works out at roughly 1 EUR = 119 XPF. That rate does not include exchange fees, card fees or ATM charges, so the amount you get is lower than the arithmetic suggests. Prices on this site are in XPF, with the year they were published.
Flights to New Caledonia
The international carrier Aircalin is a different company from Air Calédonie, which flies inside the territory. The Aircalin service notices published in October 2026 refer to the routes Nouméa to Bangkok to Paris and Nouméa to Singapore. Plan on a stopover on the way from Europe.
Aircalin had disruptions this year: a technical problem with both A330 aircraft around 17 to 20 August 2026, and a technical fault in October with Bangkok and Paris flights rebooked on 12 and 13 October, and Singapore flights of 11 October rescheduled to 12 October. These are past events, not a description of the regular timetable, but they are a reason to leave buffer time in your itinerary.
Air Calédonie flies from La Tontouta since 2 March 2026. Older guides still mention Magenta as the domestic airport, which is out of date for Air Calédonie flights. Check which airport your domestic ticket uses.

Getting around
From the airport, in Nouméa and between the islands.
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Tontouta Express | 500 XPF per trip, with 4 fixed stops, timed to the flight schedule. It is not an around-the-clock service. |
| Airport parking | The first 20 minutes are free, according to a government announcement from 17 February 2026. |
| Tanéo buses in Nouméa | 500 XPF for a single trip with the Ticket secours. The anonymous Pass Liberté also costs 500 XPF and includes free connections for 1 hour 30 minutes. |
| Air Calédonie to the islands | On 19 October 2026 flights to the Île des Pins and Lifou were running normally, flights to Maré were cancelled and flights to Ouvéa were resuming step by step. |
| Betico ferry | The operator gives Nouméa to the Île des Pins as about 2 hours 30 minutes, with longer times to the Loyalty Islands. Press reports from 29 August 2026 describe reduced service after engine trouble, with a replacement vessel expected to run until the end of October. |
Island transport can change at short notice, so confirm your flight or ferry shortly before departure and avoid tight connections. On the islands, arrange a rental car or a transfer with your accommodation before you arrive. More on this is on the Loyalty Islands page and the Île des Pins page.
Cruise passengers in Nouméa
If your ship docks near the container quay, a transfer to the cruise terminal is required and is organized by the cruise line. Do not walk through the working port. The Quai des Longs Courriers is close to the city center. The terminal offers information, currency exchange, toilets, handicrafts, independent excursion providers and free WiFi. Do not count on it being open on days when no ship calls.
A press report from early 2026 says that Maré and the Île des Pins remained closed to regular large cruise ships, with exceptions for small luxury trips.

Is New Caledonia safe?
Status as of October 2026. Unrest in May 2024 affected the territory, and the situation can change.
Australian advice
Smartraveller (updated 27 August 2026, shown as current on 9 October 2026) advises a high degree of caution because of possible unrest and violence. It notes a stronger police presence and says isolated incidents remain possible. Avoid demonstrations and roadblocks, follow local instructions, and expect that new restrictions can be announced at short notice.
German advice
The German Foreign Office covers New Caledonia on its France page, dated 20 October 2026. It names November to April as the tropical storm season. Check the page for the current wording before you go.
What this means
Nobody can honestly say that everything is back to normal everywhere. Read the current advice from your government before you book, and follow local news during your stay.
Swimming and sharks
In Nouméa, swim in the protected zones at Baie des Citrons and Château Royal. The rest of Anse Vata and other beaches do not carry the same protection. After a fatal shark attack in February 2026, the city banned swimming and water sports outside the protected zones from 23 February to 4 March, and again from 15 to 26 April after another attack. See the Nouméa guide for details.
Respect for local custom
Kanak custom, called coutume, shapes how visitors enter tribal land. Ask the local hosts first, ask before taking photos of people or places, and do not enter places with special cultural meaning without permission. Our Tjibaou Cultural Centre page explains the basics, and the weather page covers the cyclone season, which affects your timing.
