The Isle of Pines at a glance
The Isle of Pines works best when you give it more than a few hours. The main sights are two neighboring beaches, a natural pool inside a bay of tall araucaria trees and the water around the Upi bay, which you can cross in a traditional outrigger canoe.
Getting there is the main planning question. A scheduled flight takes about 40 minutes. The ferry takes around 2 hours 30 minutes in normal operation, and schedules have been disrupted in 2026 (see below). Both facts shape whether you can do the island in one day.

Kuto and Kanuméra beaches
Kuto Bay is where the ferry arrives. Kuto and Kanuméra are two beaches separated by a narrow strip of land, so you can walk from one to the other on the same outing. This makes them the easiest part of the island to visit if you arrive without a rental car.
The rock of Kanuméra is described as sacred. Treat it as a place of respect rather than a photo backdrop, and ask locally if you are unsure where you may walk or climb.
Fees and parking charges at the two beaches can change, so check on arrival if you drive.

The Oro natural pool
Oro is the best known sight on the island. There are two ways to reach it, and they make a good loop.
On foot from the parking lot
Start at the parking lot in front of the resort at Oro Bay. Parking is free. The path to the pool is not suitable for wheelchairs.
By pirogue through Upi
Traditional outrigger canoes leave from Baie Saint-Joseph with a local boatman and cross the Baie d'Upi. After landing you walk about 45 minutes through forest to the natural pool. Agree the return before you set off: you can come back by canoe or continue on foot toward Oro. Fare and daily departure times are set locally, so ask when you arrive.
Entrance fee
An entrance fee is charged at Oro and is paid in cash. The amount is quoted differently in different places, so carry small notes in XPF and confirm the current price at the entrance. Ask there as well about any exemption for hotel guests.
Conditions on the day
The pool is listed as open daily in 2026, without fixed hours. Weather and sea conditions still decide whether the visit is a good idea, so ask your accommodation or boatman before you set out.
The bay around Oro is lined with columnar araucarias. Give yourself time for the walk, not just the swim, and bring water and sun protection.
Getting to the Isle of Pines
Air Calédonie has flown from La Tontouta since 2 March 2026. Older pages that mention Magenta for domestic flights are out of date for this airline.
| Flight | Ferry | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | About 40 minutes (example: 07:50 to 08:30) | Around 2 h 30 min in normal operation |
| Arrives | Isle of Pines airport (Moué) | Kuto Bay |
| Price | Offers valid from 1 March 2025: 17,104 XPF return (Ultra Light, no luggage), 20,602 XPF return (Super Loisir) | Check the current fare when you book |
| Watch for | Days and seats vary, so check the timetable for your date | Reduced schedule and longer crossings in 2026 |
On 19 October 2026 traffic to the Isle of Pines was reported as normal. A press report of 29 August 2026 describes an engine problem on the ferry operator's vessel, reduced service, longer crossings and adapted timetables until about the end of October, with a replacement vessel on some Isle of Pines runs. Do not assume a fixed weekend or day schedule. Confirm the timetable for your dates, and confirm that your return leg is booked before you leave Nouméa.
Day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip is possible only if the flight or ferry gives you a return the same day, and that depends on the timetable of your date. With a ferry of around 2 hours 30 minutes each way, a day trip leaves little time on the island, and the Oro visit alone takes a good part of a day once you add the canoe and the forest walk. Plan at least one night if you want to see Oro without rushing.
For a stay at Oro Bay, the resort there is now called Le Domaine Oro, Series by Marriott. It lists check-in at 15:00, check-out at 12:00 and free parking for guests, and it does not list a hotel shuttle. Arrange your transfer from the airport or Kuto Bay before you arrive. More options by area are on where to stay in New Caledonia.
Reports from early 2026 say regular large cruise ships were still not calling at the Isle of Pines. Cruise visitors should ask their line what is planned.

Isle of Pines: frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get to the Isle of Pines?
A scheduled flight takes about 40 minutes. The ferry takes around 2 hours 30 minutes in normal operation, but 2026 timetables have been adjusted after a vessel engine problem, so crossings may be longer.
Can I do the Isle of Pines as a day trip from Nouméa?
Only if the flight or ferry on your date gives you a same-day return. Even then the time on the island is short. An overnight stay is the safer plan, especially if you want to reach the Oro natural pool.
How do I reach the Oro natural pool?
Either walk from the parking lot in front of the resort at Oro Bay, or take an outrigger canoe from Baie Saint-Joseph through the Baie d'Upi and walk about 45 minutes through forest. The path is not wheelchair accessible.
How much does it cost to enter Oro?
An entrance fee is charged and paid in cash. Because the figure is quoted differently in different places, confirm the current amount at the entrance and carry small notes in XPF.
Which airport do the flights leave from?
Air Calédonie has departed from La Tontouta since 2 March 2026. Check the departure airport printed on your ticket.
Are Kuto and Kanuméra in walking distance of each other?
Yes. They are separated by a narrow strip of land and can be combined on foot. The rock of Kanuméra is described as sacred, so treat it with respect.
