The Loyalty Islands at a glance
Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa are not interchangeable. Each island has its own airport, ferry port, sights and local customs, and in 2026 each has had a different transport situation. Most visits are built around coastal scenery, caves, cliffs and time spent with local hosts, so plan for a slow trip with transfers arranged in advance.
Transport is the first thing to settle. On 19 October 2026 a tourism information page reported normal flights to Lifou, cancelled Air Calédonie flights to Maré and a gradual resumption to Ouvéa. Treat that as a snapshot for one day, not a promise for your dates.

Air Calédonie has flown from La Tontouta since 2 March 2026, and some older island pages still name Magenta. Check the departure airport on your ticket. Published return offers for the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands were 17,104 XPF (Ultra Light, no luggage) and 20,602 XPF (Super Loisir), valid from 1 March 2025. Current fares and seats may differ. The ferry operator reported an engine problem in August 2026 with adjusted timetables until about the end of October, so ferry times and frequencies need checking for your dates.
Lifou
Lifou's highlights include the Jokin cliffs, beaches, caves and vanilla plantations. You arrive at Wanaham airport or at the ferry port in Wé. Cruise passengers land at Easo in the Baie de Santal in the northwest, where ships anchor and passengers come ashore by tender. Only one cruise ship is allowed at a time, and Easo is not the ferry port.
Organize a rental car or scooter, or a transfer through your accommodation, before you arrive.
For Jinek bay, check current access conditions and any fee locally.

Maré
Maré's list of sights includes Eni, Wabao, Hpédé, Trou de Bone and the Aquarium naturel near Tadine. Swimming is not allowed in the Aquarium naturel, so watch from the edge. Tadine is the ferry arrival and the usual pick-up point for rental cars, and La Roche is the airport.
The terraces of Shabadran are the best known walk, and they are not a casual stroll. Access is only with a guide from the Tribu Kurine. You register in advance and pay for the tour in cash. Allow a full day. The first rest point is about 2.5 hours on foot, the path has little shade, and parts are exposed or technically harder on coral rock. The walk is not a day trip from Nouméa that you can add on a whim.
With Air Calédonie flights to Maré cancelled on 19 October 2026, confirm how you will arrive before you pay for anything that cannot be refunded. Regular large cruise ships were reported in early 2026 as still not calling at Maré.

Ouvéa
Ouvéa is known for the Mouli beach and bridge, the Lékiny cliffs and boat trips to the Pléiades du Nord and du Sud. An Air Calédonie flight from La Tontouta to Ouvéa operated on 10 September 2026 after a break of several months, and on 19 October 2026 the resumption was still described as gradual. The ferry is about six hours from Nouméa, on request, so do not assume a regular service.
At Lékiny you need a guide from the Tribu Lékiny for close access. Swimming in the bay without a guide is not allowed, because the bay is described as a customary and natural reserve. Ask your host to arrange it.

Visiting tribal land and the coutume
Many sights lie on customary land, which belongs to the local community. The coutume is a short exchange of words and a symbolic gift, offered as a way of introducing yourself and showing respect. It is not an entrance fee and it does not buy access.
When you plan to visit a site on customary land, ask your hosts or the people responsible locally how access works. The gesture is made to the chief or the petit chef as a request for permission. For stays booked in advance with a tribe, the tourism board says the gesture is not needed on arrival. The Ouvéa page asks for the coutume before entering customary land, so confirm locally which applies. A piece of cloth is a typical gift, and 500 XPF is given as an example, but other personal gifts are accepted and there is no fixed rate.
Ask permission before you photograph people or places. Some sites carry restrictions because of their cultural meaning, including Lékiny. Small tribal accommodation may take direct bookings rather than online reservations. More on Kanak culture is on the Tjibaou Cultural Centre page.

Loyalty Islands: frequently asked questions
Which Loyalty Island should I visit first?
Lifou has the simplest transport picture in October 2026, with normal flights reported on 19 October. Maré and Ouvéa had cancellations or only a gradual return of flights, so check your arrival before booking either.
Can I do the Loyalty Islands as day trips from Nouméa?
Plan overnight stays instead. Ferries take about 4 to 6 hours each way in general, and they have been affected by reduced service. Shabadran on Maré is a guided full-day walk, not an add-on.
Do I need a guide at Lékiny on Ouvéa?
Yes. For close access you need a guide from the Tribu Lékiny, and swimming in the bay without one is not allowed.
Can I walk to Shabadran on my own?
No. Access is only with a guide from the Tribu Kurine. Register in advance and pay for the tour in cash.
Do I need to arrange a rental car?
On Lifou, arrange a rental car or scooter, or a transfer through your accommodation, before you arrive. On Maré, Tadine is the usual rental car handover point.
What is the coutume and do I pay for it?
It is a short exchange of words and a symbolic gift that shows respect when you visit customary land. There is no fixed price, and other personal gifts are accepted.
