Nouméa in a nutshell

Nouméa is the capital of New Caledonia, on the main island of Grande Terre. Most trips start here, and the day cruises to Amédée leave from the city. The beaches of Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons are the city's seaside, and buses connect them with the center around Place des Cocotiers.

The city offers a lot for a few days: a lagoon aquarium, a cultural center of Kanak art and a long waterfront. Swimming needs more care than at most beach towns. The rules and the closures of 2026 are explained below.

Swimming at Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons

Protected zones are not the same as the whole beach.

Baie des Citrons

The city describes a marked swimming zone with a shark barrier and supervision. Lifeguards are on duty from 8:45 am to 5:00 pm from October to the end of April and from 8:45 am to 4:00 pm from May to the end of September.

Château Royal and Méridien

A second protected zone lies in front of the Château Royal and the Méridien. The rest of Anse Vata and other beaches and islets are not automatically covered by this protection, and the city recommends protected and supervised areas.

Temporary bans in 2026

After a fatal shark attack on a wingfoil rider off Anse Vata on 22 February 2026, swimming and water sports were banned outside the protected zones from 23 February to 4 March. A further ban applied from 15 to 26 April 2026 after an attack at Côte Blanche, with the protected zones excluded. From 27 April swimming was allowed again at your own risk.

What this means for you

Swim in the protected, supervised zones and read the city's current notices before you enter the water. Restrictions were imposed at short notice twice this year.

Things to do in Nouméa

Place des Cocotiers is the main square in the city center. The Fontaine Céleste and the music pavilion belong to it, and the zero point for road kilometers is at the fountain.

Tjibaou Cultural Centre stands in Tina, on Rue des Accords de Matignon. It presents Kanak and Oceanic art and a path, the Chemin Kanak. Adults pay 1,000 XPF. The Tjibaou page has the details.

Day cruise to Amédée is the standard outing from the city. See the Amédée guide. For a longer list that goes beyond the city, read things to do in New Caledonia.

Reduced rates cover groups of 10 or more, seniors, students, people with a disability and their companions, job seekers, volunteers and war veterans. Hours are 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm from Monday to Friday, and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. The last entry is at 4:30 pm. No weekly closing day is listed. Tickets can be bought online, and the evening rate is separate from the day rate, so do not mix them up.

Closed for now

Two sights that older guides still list.

Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie

The museum is closed for extension and renovation, and its collections are online. A reopening in 2026 has been announced, but an announcement is not an open door. Check before you plan around it.

Île aux Canards

The operator shows a closure notice for a first renovation phase with no end date. Older snorkeling and restaurant tips for the islet do not apply for now.

Getting around Nouméa

Buses, the airport and the cruise port.

City buses

The Tanéo network sells a single ticket, the Ticket secours, for 500 XPF. An anonymous Liberté pass also costs 500 XPF and includes free connections for 1 hour 30 minutes. Check the current timetable before you go, as not every sight has a bus line to its door.

The airport

International flights land at La Tontouta. Since 2 March 2026 the domestic carrier Air Calédonie also flies from there and no longer from Magenta, the city airport. The Tontouta Express shuttle costs 500 XPF per trip, serves 4 fixed stops and follows the flight schedule, so it does not run around the clock. At the airport the first 20 minutes of parking are free.

The cruise port

Ships docking at the container quay use a mandatory transfer to the cruise terminal, organized by the cruise line. Do not walk through the working port. The Quai des Longs Courriers is close to the center. The terminal has information, currency exchange, toilets, crafts, independent tour operators and free WiFi, but do not assume it opens on days without a ship.

Weather and where to stay

In the climate averages for Nouméa, October is the driest month at 36.3 mm of rain, with highs of 26.2 °C and lows of 19.6 °C. February has the warmest days at 29.9 °C. The cyclone season runs from November to April by the local definition. The weather page has all twelve months.

For a base, Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons put you by the beach, and the center puts you near the square and the buses. The where to stay page compares the areas.
