Amédée at a glance

Amédée is a small island in the lagoon, known for its lighthouse and for snorkeling and diving. The usual way to visit is a day package by boat from Nouméa. The package is built around the crossing, a glass-bottom boat, lunch and a show, and it runs on set dates rather than every day.

Treat the lighthouse climb as a separate question from the boat day. Whether the staircase is open, whether it costs extra and whether it is included in your package are points to confirm when you book.

The lighthouse

The lighthouse is 56 m high and has 247 steps. It was first put into service on 15 November 1865. The steps show how the tower is built, but they do not guarantee that the staircase is open on the day of your visit, so ask the operator.

A separate entry fee, a rule for children and daily opening hours may apply. Confirm them when you book.

Dates, protection rules and planning

Not a daily trip

The booking calendar offers selectable dates only. In October 2026 these included 21 and 25 October. Choose a date from the calendar and do not assume a boat every day.

Reef and animal rules

Fishing, touching turtles, disturbing small marine animals and collecting shells are not allowed. Keep to these rules in the water and on the beach.

Do not confuse it with Île aux Canards

Île aux Canards, another islet near Nouméa, shows a notice of closure for renovation with no reopening date. That notice does not concern Amédée, but do not plan a visit to Île aux Canards until the operator says it is open.

Seasons and weather

The cyclone season runs from November to April by the local definition, and the sea state can change a boat day. See the weather page for monthly figures.

What to bring and what to book

Decide before you go whether you want to rent snorkeling gear, a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, because these are paid extras on the day. Bring sun protection, a swimsuit and a towel, and keep valuables to a minimum on a boat day.

Read the price list as a package: the base price covers the crossing, the glass-bottom boat, lunch, drinks with the meal and the show. The fuel surcharge of 250 XPF per guest comes on top. If you are traveling with a family, the table above shows how quickly the total changes by age group, so check each child's age against the bands.

Book a date early in your stay, then keep a spare day in case the sea or the weather changes the plan. Because the boat does not run every day, a missed date can mean waiting for the next one on the calendar.

If the sea is rough or no date fits

The Aquarium des Lagons at Anse Vata in Nouméa is a land-based way to see the lagoon. It is at 61 Promenade Roger Laroque. Day admission is 1,600 XPF for adults aged 18 and over and 800 XPF for ages 3 to 17, and children under 3 enter free. Reduced rates are 1,200 and 600 XPF with proof. These are the prices shown by the aquarium in October 2026.

Hours are Mon to Fri 13:00–18:00 and Sat, Sun and holidays 09:00–18:00, with last entry at 16:30. Check the current times before you go. More on the city is on the Nouméa page.
