The Tjibaou Cultural Centre at a glance
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre is a cultural site in Nouméa devoted to Kanak and Oceanic art. It stands in the Tina district, on Rue des Accords de Matignon. A guided program called Chemin Kanak refers to Téa Kanaké.
Plan a few hours. It works well on a day when you stay in Nouméa and want something besides the beach. The Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie is closed for extension and renovation, so the cultural centre is the place to build a Kanak culture visit around.

Admission and opening hours
Prices are in XPF and are the ones the centre publishes for adults and reduced categories. Check the current rates at the ticket desk before you go.
| Visitor | Admission |
|---|---|
| Adult | 1,000 XPF |
| Under 18, over 65, and listed card holders such as students, trainees and youth card holders | 500 XPF |

Opening days are Tuesday to Sunday, from 09:00. The centre is closed on Mondays and on public holidays. It closes at 17:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, and the last admission is at 16:30. On Sunday the centre's English page gives 16:00 as the closing time, while the French page gives 17:00. Plan to be out by 16:00 on a Sunday and confirm the hours before you go.
Some individual events at the centre are free. That does not mean the visit as a whole is free, so budget for the admission above.
The Chemin Kanak program
The centre lists a guided program called Chemin Kanak. It runs on Tuesday at 14:30 and lasts 1.5 hours. The price includes admission to the site, a performance and a commented tour. Reservation is required.
| Visitor | Chemin Kanak price |
|---|---|
| Regular | 3,000 XPF |
| Reduced | 2,500 XPF |
| Under 12 | 1,500 XPF |
Do not count on the program running every week. Confirm the date and book before you build a day around it. Do not mix it up with the standard admission: the program price is a separate package.

How to plan the visit
A simple order that avoids the usual problems.
Pick the day
Avoid Mondays and public holidays. If you want the guided Chemin Kanak, plan for a Tuesday and reserve first.
Arrive with time
Aim for the morning. That leaves room before the late-afternoon closing, and the last admission is at 16:30 on days with a 17:00 closing.
Know the prices
Admission is in XPF. The Chemin Kanak is a separate package with its own price, listed below the standard admission.
Plan your way there
Check how you will get to Tina and back before you leave. A taxi or a rental car is the simplest plan. Confirm any bus connection on the day.
Visiting Kanak culture with respect
The centre is a good first step, but it does not replace local custom. Kanak people call the framework of respect, words and a symbolic gift coutume. It marks introduction, recognition and respect. It is not an entrance fee, and it does not buy access.
When you visit customary land elsewhere, such as in a tribu on the islands, you ask the local hosts or the people responsible for access. The usual gesture is made to the chief or the petit chef as a request for permission. A gift can be a piece of cloth, a manou, or a small sum such as 500 XPF, and other personal gifts are also accepted. Do not treat this as a fixed tariff. If you have pre-booked a stay in a tribu, the host arranges the welcome.
Ask before you photograph people or private places. Some sites have cultural significance and special access rules. A tourist map is not permission to enter. Our Loyalty Islands guide and the travel tips repeat the points that matter on Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa.
Combine it with the rest of Nouméa
The centre sits well in a day with the city. In the morning you can visit the grounds, and in the afternoon you can go to the beaches. Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons are described on our Nouméa page, including which swimming zones are protected. For a longer trip, the lagoon page and the Amédée page cover the water side of the trip.
If the weather decides your plan, see the weather page. A cultural visit is also a sensible fallback on a wet day.
